When you add an active page to your website’s navigation system in Site Setup, one of three things happens.
- The page becomes an item in the menu.
- The page becomes an item in a menu section with the same name as the page.
- The page becomes an item in a menu section with a different name.
Of these three scenarios, (2) above does not represent best web-design practices. That’s because the page name appears as the menu-item name, and then the page itself appears—by the same name—as the first item in the menu. That’s not an optimal way to set up your menu, but Site Setup offers a way to correct it through a feature called the Dropdown Name.
Dropdown Names enable you to create website menu sections with names that are different from the names of any pages in the menu section. Here’s how to add and edit Dropdown Names.
How to add a Dropdown Name to an existing website page
- Click on the “Manage Site” tab on the vertical Dashboard menu at the left side of the screen.
- Click on the “Site Setup” tab.
- To add a Dropdown Name to an existing page, locate the page in the vertical Site Setup menu at the left side of the screen. Place your cursor over the name of the page to reveal, and then click on, the Edit icon (pencil).
- In the “EDIT PAGE” window that opens, click in the “Dropdown Name” box and enter the text you want to appear as the menu section name.
- Click on the “Update” button to save your changes.
- Click on the “Save and Publish” button at the top of the “Site Builder” window to finalize your changes and make them visible on your public site.
- If this page already is the first page in a website menu section that contains other active pages, your Dropdown Name will appear in the menu automatically. In the vertical Site Setup menu, you’ll see
[Dropdown Name]/[Page Name]
instead of just the page name. The other pages in the menu will appear below the combination of Dropdown Name and first page name. - If the page to which you applied the Dropdown Name is a new page or has no other pages below it in a menu section, now you will need to move or create at least one other page underneath it. Otherwise, the Dropdown Name will not appear. Note that the page that incorporates the Dropdown Name must have at least one active page set up to appear under it in your website menu, or the Dropdown Name will not appear. Inactive pages do not count toward this requirement.
